On 20 August 2025, over 60 female farmers from the Maphumulo area gathered to attend a farmers’ workshop aimed at promoting agricultural education and celebrating women’s contributions during Women’s Month. The event was jointly organised by Emseni Farming, Bonle Dairy, RTS, and the Mzikayise Ndlovu Foundation.
The workshop focused on empowering women through agricultural knowledge and encouraging active participation in farming. All invited speakers were women, reinforcing the message of female leadership in agriculture. Participants were urged to remain committed to farming and to attend educational workshops that equip them with practical skills and insights. They were also encouraged to involve their children in gardening activities to foster generational learning and interest in agriculture.
One of the keynote speakers, Miss Welile Gumede, shared her inspiring journey into farming. She began her agricultural business with a government grant of R350 and now supplies produce to major supermarkets. Her dedication has earned her multiple awards and opportunities to travel abroad to expand her agricultural knowledge.
Other speakers included Ms. Thalente Mngoma and Ms. Nganele Mbokazi, who also shared valuable insights and experiences.
The next workshop is scheduled for 26 September 2025 at the Resource Centre in Maphumulo. The theme will be: “Small Farmers: Keep the Profit You Earn from Selling Vegetables and Start a R5.00 Money Stokvel.”
At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees received spinach and beetroot seedlings, along with a variety of seeds to plant at home—further supporting their journey toward sustainable farming.
