We care for our community

Our farming footprint is based in rural KZN, South Africa, where we operate in harmony with our neighbours.
We have several farming & social initiatives where we are constantly active.

We have two main initiatives. One: we encourage individuals to plant vegetables in their personal gardens, teaching them how to grow their own food successfully. The second initiative involves teaching different groups - very small children, school children, young adults, and senior citizens - how to plant vegetables as well as growing their own vegetable seedlings.

Pietermaritzburg, 6 June 2025 — The Union Bible Institute (UBI) celebrated a special milestone as Emseni Farming officially donated a seedling nursery to the college. The initiative marks a significant step toward practical agricultural training for students.
Former principal Dr. Rev. Mnisi expressed deep gratitude for the nursery, an answer to prayer. After visiting the KwaSizabantu Mission, Dr. Mnisi was inspired to bring planting opportunities to UBI. His vision has now become a reality.
The nursery will provide students with hands-on experience in planting and growing seedlings, equipping them with valuable skills for community development. UBI extended heartfelt thanks to Rev. Erlo Stegen, founder of KwaSizabantu Mission, and Emseni Farming for their commitment to empowering communities through agriculture.
The entire UBI community—students, staff, and board members—welcomed the nursery with joy and appreciation.

Entrepreneurship Initiatives

With the vision from our founder and director, Reverend Erlo Stegen, we developed a community nursery for avocado trees which we sell to emerging farmers at a subsidised price.

We have passed on our acquired knowledge in avocado growing to the farmers, teaching them about soil health, planting and management of orchards so that they can successfully grow their own avocado trees for their families but also as an initiative to start their own avocado growing businesses.

We buy the seeds from these farmers as rootstock for our avocado orchards. When their trees bear fruit, these farmers will be able to sell the avocados to Emseni to pack and sell.
